Betting on Balance

A Winning Strategy for a Healthy Life

Today, we're delving into the world of probabilities and decision-making to shake up the way you think about your diet and workouts. No, we're not turning into mathematicians or professional gamblers, but we are borrowing some wisdom from an unexpected source: the book "Thinking in Bets" by Annie Duke.

"This food is good, that food is bad." "Cardio is the only way to lose weight." "Strength training will make me bulky."

While it's tempting to classify things as a simple yes or no, the reality is that life (and our fitness journeys) are much more complex. When we think in absolutes, we set ourselves up for guilt, shame, and disordered eating - a recipe for disaster in the long run.

Not to mention, only a Sith deals in absolutes.

Annie Duke's "Thinking in Bets" offers a different perspective, inviting us to approach decisions like a poker player. Instead of focusing on right or wrong, Duke encourages us to think in probabilities and percentages. The idea is simple: if we can consider the range of potential outcomes, we can make more informed choices and ultimately, create a more balanced lifestyle. And you know what they say - a balanced diet is a... less miserable diet?

Now, how does this apply to our health and fitness journey? Let's say you're faced with a decision between a slice of pizza and a kale salad for lunch.

Instead of immediately categorizing the pizza as "bad" and the kale salad as "good," take a step back and think in bets.

  • What's the probability that the pizza will satisfy your hunger and fuel your workout later?

  • How about the kale salad?

  • Are there any potential downsides or upsides to either option?

By approaching the decision this way, we're allowing ourselves to see that there's no one-size-fits-all answer, and that it's okay to enjoy the things we love, in moderation.

Now zoom out a bit. You’re trying to decide on a workout routine to reach your goals. Instead of falling into the trap of thinking, "I must do cardio every day to lose weight," take a moment to consider the odds.

  • What are the chances that you'll actually stick to an intense cardio routine seven days a week without burning out?

  • How likely is it that incorporating rest days and some strength training might actually benefit your overall fitness goals?

By evaluating the probabilities and potential outcomes, you can create a more sustainable and enjoyable plan that still gets results.

This probability-based mindset also helps us tackle setbacks with more resilience. Say you had an off day and indulged in some sweet treats or skipped a workout. Instead of labeling the day as a total failure, remind yourself that every decision falls on a spectrum, and one "unhealthy" choice doesn't undo all your hard work. Life is full of ups and downs, and being kind to ourselves and recognizing the bigger picture can help us bounce back and stay on track.

Adopting a "Thinking in Bets" mindset can revolutionize the way we approach our health and fitness journeys. By focusing on probabilities and understanding the spectrum of choices, we can escape the guilt, shame, and restriction that comes with black and white thinking. Embracing this new perspective allows us to make more informed decisions, create balanced lifestyles, and ultimately, enjoy the ride towards our goals.

So!
